POLICE have launched a manhunt for an offender who escaped at Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhulenu while guarded by correctional services officials.
It’s alleged that the offender, who is a remand detainee, was abducted by a group of men who overpowered officials who were guarding him on Tuesday morning, 5 April, at the hospital.
The offender, Ndingwe Mabena (36), was arrested for murder and incarcerated at Joburg Correctional Centre, where he was admitted in August last year.
According to the Department of Correctional Services spokesman Sechaba Mphahlele, their officials were attacked during the incident.
“Two officials escorting a remand detainee were attacked at the Tembisa Hospital leading to the abduction of the detainee that morning. One official sustained injury on the face after he was hit with a gun butt by the attackers. During the scuffle, the attackers abducted the remand detainee. The abduction has been reported to the South African Police Service and the investigation is continuing. The Department of Correctional Services has also launched an internal investigation to establish all facts about the abduction,” he said.
Mphahlele said: “Members of the public who might have information that may lead to the arrest of the abductors and re-arrest of Mabena can contact their nearest police station.”
