SNEGUGU Myeni, the South African student who died in the Philippines in Asia on Monday, 10 July, was laid to rest in Utrecht in KZN on Saturday, 29 July.
The 32-year-old was in her final year of her neurosurgery studies in the Phillippines when she died.
After her death, her family was dealt another blow when Icebolethu Funerals sent them a quotation of R216 000 to fly her remains back home.
But her family experienced financial struggles and her mother, Lindiwe (67) took to social media to ask for help. The KZN provincial government jumped on board to help and Snegugu's body was flown to Mzansi on Wednesday, 26 July.
The funeral service, which was held at Bergsig Sports Ground, was also attended by KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and KZN Education MEC, Mbali Frazer.
A heartbroken Lindiwe said her daughter was her hero as nothing could stop her from doing what she wanted to do.
“She had a vision about the life she wanted. This made her not afraid of going up and down with flights. She stayed in an overseas country with so many challenges, but she was patient for 10 years. She tried all her best in life, but things didn’t go according to her plans,” she said.
She added that Snegugu's four-year-old child will wipe away her tears.

Dube-Ncube said it was a sad to bid farewell to Snegugu as her situation touched many people in KZN and South Africa.
“On behalf of the KZN people and the KZN government we would like to convey words of condolences to the Myeni family for losing their child.
“We have learned many things about Snegugu’s life and about her good soul that appears even though she is no more. She was a hard worker,” she said.
