DECADES ago, praying at the rain rock in Nongoma, northern KZN, would bring rain during the dry seasons.
The three-tier rock, named itshe limankenge, is located in KwaMajomela Village.
It makes sounds like a school hand bell.
But in 1964, households moved away from the mountain.
The rock was left neglected and did not bring rain anymore.
Today, it is still on the mountain, making the sounds.
Villager Khaya Ndwandwe (48) said growing up in the village, they were privileged enough to witness the miracles of the rock.
“A local man would take young boys to the mountain and pray before the rock to bring rain.
“He would go in the morning and in the afternoon, and it would start raining,” said Khaya.
He said that the man did this tradition until he moved out of the village years later, and so the practice stopped. “The rock was left unattended but still sounded unique.
“To this day when you go to that mountain, the rock is still there and has that unique sound.”
Ward committee member Fihliwe Myeza said the rock has been part of their lives since they were born. They now want the site to be turned into a tourist destination.
“The rock has a rich history that we believe needs to be told to the world. I made the municipality aware because I want them to build an access road as more people come to our village to see the stone.”

Mayor Albert Mncwango said: “I will be getting a full report from the team, and we will know the further steps to take.
“We might invite geologists to inspect the rock.”
