Villagers stoned two robbery suspects to death, setting them and their car alight in Tshavhalovhedzi Village outside Thohoyandou, Limpopo, on Wednesday.

VILLAGERS stoned two men to death and burnt their bodies while a third one was rescued by the police.

This after the three suspects allegedly robbed a 23-year-old woman of her cellphone and other belongings at a shopping complex in Tshavhalovhedzi Village outside Thohoyandou, Limpopo on Wednesday, 17 August.

They then attempted to kidnap the woman in full view of shoppers, but drove off after she screamed for help.

The villagers and shoppers then gave chase and caught up with the suspects.

They then stoned the two suspects to death and burnt their vehicle.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the third suspect was rescued by the police and arrested.

Mojapelo said the villagers surrounded the police station demanding the suspect’s release, but the police contained the situation.

Anyone with information about the suspects who took the law into their own hands is urged to contact Lieutenant-Colonel Adziambei Nemavunde on 082 461 7554 or CrimeStop on 086 001 0111.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe warned community members to desist from engaging in acts of vigilantism and mob attacks.

“The tendency of some community members taking the law into their own hands will be dealt with mercilessly and those responsible will be hunted down and brought to book,” said Hadebe.
