FINALLY the stink from the crematorium has ended!
A crematorium has been causing a stink in Despatch and Khayamnandi areas of Nelson Mandela Bay.
Residents reported to the municipality that a cloud of heavy smoke and the ashes of bodies were coming from the crematory chimney.
“We couldn’t even eat!” said resident Siphiwo Phetha.
“People were complaining of chest pains due to the smoke. The crematorium is a health hazard.”
He said children were getting sick and they can’t let them play outside.
The municipality has closed down the mortuary.

“It is good to see that the municipality listened to our complaints and closed the place. We have reported the issue for a long time.
“We want that place to be relocated to a remote area where there are no people so that we can enjoy fresh air,” he said.
A director for the crematorium, Hannes Marais said: “We helped with cremations countrywide during Covid-19 when other crematoriums battled.
“This put immense strain on our equipment. Repairs and maintenance were much needed.”
Public health MMC Thsonono Buyeye said: “We received many complaints about the smoke and dust coming from the crematorium. In our investigation, we discovered that they were not complying with the law.
“They made adjustments to their building that resulted in non-compliance, causing residents to complain.”
Buyeye said upon accessing the building, a decision was made that the crematorium would be closed and a fine of R200 000 was imposed.
“The business will remain closed until all standards are met,” said Buyeye.
