BEING without electricity for the whole week has pushed residents of Siyanda, north of Durban, to take their anger to the streets.
The angry residents blockaded Malandela Road on Wednesday, 3 April, demanding electricity.
They blockaded the busy Malandela Road which enters into KwaMashu in the morning with burning tyres, disturbing drivers who use that route.
Some of the angry residents were even throwing stones at cars that tried to pass through the blockage.
This forced drivers to use alternative routes to get to their destinations on time.
A gatvol resident, Nomcebo Kweyama, told Daily Sun it has been a week they've been without electricity. They said their councillor should work hard in making sure electricity is restored otherwise they won’t stop protesting.

"This is very unfair. How are we expected to live without electricity for such a long time? We can’t cook, we're forced to buy takeaways. Those who can't afford takeaways have to start fire in order to cook. We are afraid to leave our homes when it gets dark because we fear being robbed in the dark. Since there's no electricity there are thugs who are busy robbing people in the dark," she said.
Another resident said he charges his cellphone at work since he can't charge it at home.
"We can't iron our clothes when going to work. I had to throw away my chicken pieces because they became rotten in the fridge. Other residents were also forced to throw away food. This is really not fair, and we want the councillor to get up and do something. This is not load shedding but maybe there is a fault somewhere that needs to be fixed," he said.
He said residents are angry. That's why they protested and even threw stones at cars that were passing near the area.
Councillor Nhlanhla Sibiya said he's aware of this matter and is working on it.
