A MAN and a woman claim they’ve been sent by mamlambo, the river snake or mermaid, to warn people that they’re in danger.

They said people living near the banks of the river in Kaalfontein, near Ebony Park in Midrand extension 7 must move as they are in its way. A video of the two people telling this story is making the rounds on TikTok.

According to them, mamlambo wants to get out of the river to fly somewhere.

The SunTeam went to Kaalfontein and interviewed residents who said although they were not aware of the video, they see strange things happening in the river after the rains.

“We often see reeds lying flat as if something heavy and huge was moving on top of them,” said Manuel Nkuna.

Another resident confirmed seeing these trails on top of the reeds. “It’s scary but so far there has not been any damage.”

Residents have been living close to the river for more than 10 years.

But despite the talk of danger, many houses are built right by the river and some are still under construction.

Veli Mkhondo said:“Whether we believe in mermaids or river snakes, nature needs to be respected because there’s danger lurking underneath.”

Sangoma Nomalizo Mngoma said she was not aware of the video but said mamlambos and river snakes needed to be left in peace and nobody should invade their territory.

Robert Mulaudzi of Joburg Emergency Service said people must avoid building shacks or houses near rivers.

“It’s dangerous,” he said.
