Rapist uncle jailed for life

accreditation

A 49-YEAR-OLD uncle sneaked up on his nine-year-old niece while her mum was working night shifts.

He would rape her and give her R2 to keep quiet.

But the young girl got tired of it and informed her mother.

On Friday, 21 October, the uncle was found guilty of statutory rape at the Joburg Magistrates Court and given life imprisonment.

Captain Xoli Mbele of Joburg Central police said the uncle was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“His name will be included in the National Register for Sexual Offenders,” he said.

He said the accused started raping the little girl from 2015 until November 2018 at Slovo Park in the Brixton area.

“On 22 March 2019, the victim became brave enough and alerted her mother.

“They went to Brixton Police Station where a case was opened and the suspect was apprehended on the same day,” said Mbele.

Warrant Officer Rebecca Abrahams of the Joburg Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit was investigating the case.

She said: “We hope this sentence will scare away men who are abusing women and children.”

The mother is heartbroken that the person she trusted harmed her daughter.

“He took away her innocence and scarred her for life,” she said.
