RESIDENTS want the K54 which is still under construction and passes along Mamelodi East in Tshwane to have speed humps installed or be closed.

This is because motorists are driving at high speeds, which leads to deaths of innocent people.

The newly constructed road heads towards Pienaarspoort to the far east of Mamelodi.

According to concerned residents, several pedestrians crossing the road have died after being hit by cars.

The road has now been barricaded with stones, logs and bricks, after a woman was killed by a car last week.

According to resident Michael Nkosi (57), the accidents are happening too often and if something is not done to put an end on it, then a lot of people will die on that road.

“Since the motorists started using the road over two years ago, accidents have been happening. It is sad to see people lose their lives in such a painful manner,” he said.

Michael said they have tried on several occasions to barricade the road with stones, bricks and other rubble but it seems as if it’s not working because motorists drive as if they are racing.

“I was heartbroken when a woman was hit and killed by a car last week,” he said.

He said what was worrying is that the woman had been walking with her children along the road.

Another resident, Nkele Mashamaite (34), said the accidents are big headache for people.

“We need humps because this is not a freeway,” she said.

Traditional healer Majoko Hlongwane said the accident might be caused by the spirits of the dead.

She said in most cases when people die in road accidents, some families forget to come and take the spirits of their loved ones.

“The road need some rituals to be performed to cleanse it as many people will continue dying if such is not done,” she said.

Gauteng roads and transport department spokeswoman Melitah Madiba said: “The department will send traffic engineering officials to assess and explore traffic calming measures.”
