PUPILS got a lesson in a very unusual setting on Friday, 23 September.

They were taught about struggle heroes and celebrities at their final resting places!

Pupils from George Mbilase Primary School in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, were excitedly taking notes as they visited the graves of legends such as Phillip Moyo, Doris Baartman and Lebo Mathosa at Phumulani Cemetery.

Moyo, who was a councillor in the area, died in 1999.

SGB member Ria Mofokeng told the kids he was a struggle hero.

Baartman is said to have started the ANC Women’s League in Etwatwa and took over as councillor when Moyo died.

A grade 5 pupil said her sister often told her about how much she loved Lebo Mathosa.

“She used to say she was a hero to the people of Daveyton as she went on to become a top performer,” said the 10-year-old.

Mathosa, who died in a car crash in 2006 at the age of 29, was a founding member of Boom Shaka in 1994.

Mofokeng said the cemetery tour was a way to celebrate Heritage Month.

“Whether it’s part of the curriculum or not, kids have to know their history,” she said.
