LEONDALE Secondary School pupils were warned about the dangers of drugs.

The school based in Leondale in Ekurhuleni, in partnership with World Changers Candidate, hosted their annual 4/20 (dagga day) awareness campaign on Friday 19 April.

The awareness campaign was addressed by the Central Drug Authority chairwoman Nandi Mayathula Khoza.

Mayathula Khoza said pupils should not engage in drugs and alcohol.

"It's sad to see the growing culture of young people using drugs and alcohol to celebrate new cultures like 4/20 and pens down.

"A total of 21 young people lost their lives in 2020 as a result of a pens-down celebration in the Eastern Cape.

"Youth should stay away from new cultures that can lead them to be engaged in drugs and alcohol," said Mayathula Khoza.

Former PSL stars such as Edward Motale, Steve Lekoelea and Happy Jele also attended the event.

Motale said pupils must stay away from drugs and focus on their studies.

"A few years ago, some pupils from this school were seen on video smoking dagga, which led to some of them being suspended.

"However, I want to thank the school management for not expelling them and the role played by the World Changers Candidate to ensure the pupils get help.

"It's important to know that drugs destroyed the lives of many people. I urge you all not to even try and test drugs," said Motale.

The chairman of World Changers Candidate, Lucas Mahlakgane, said they are happy that their organisation is making a difference in the community.

"Through such initiative, the school has become a drug-free zone since the installation of a disclaimer board at the gate of the school.

"We wish we had resources to roll the program over to more schools to warn people about the danger of drugs," said Mahlakgane.
