PROTEST 'ONLY WAY TO PROTECT WORKERS'

COSATU will lead national protest action, with one of the demands being that the tender process be stopped for PPE.

General secretary Bheki Ntsha­lintshali yesterday told journalist they were ready for protest action, and its union Nehawu had warned government that putting out tenders for PPE would lead to corruption.

“At the moment, there are shocking inequalities and problems in our health system,”

“We also warned government that there is a danger of getting poor quality PPE. “We warned that PPE would not be enough. and warned treasury it was opening a gap that people would abuse,” said Ntshalintshali.

He called on South Africans and workers in particular to support the protest and demand protection for health workers.

He said the campaign aimed to protect workers and lay the foundation for access to decent healthcare becoming a reality.

“Everyone has the right to have access to healthcare services.

“At the moment, there are shocking inequalities and problems in our health system,” he said.

The nationwide protest, initiated by Nehawu, has the backing of the SACP and student organisations aligned with the ANC such as Sasco.

The campaign will kick off today with prayer services at major hospitals.

The main event will be at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto at noon. The day will be dedicated to frontline workers.

They jointly said protest action was the only option to stop the death of workers.
