MINISTER Ronald Lamola is saddened by the brutal killing of correctional services officials.

Department of Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo told Daily Sun that two officials from the Boksburg correctional facility were shot and killed as they were tracing a parolee who had absconded.

The incident took place on Tuesday, 12 July, at about 7.45pm in Duduza, Ekurhuleni.

He said a state firearm was also stolen from one of the deceased.

Minister Lamola condemned the senseless killing of the officials.

“The tremendous sense of loss is magnified by the tragic circumstances under which such a violent assault was unleashed against our officials,” said Lamola.

He sent his heartfelt and deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and fellow correctional services officials.

“We, together with SAPS, will leave no stone unturned in investigating this crime and apprehending those behind the killing of our officials.

“We want to send a strong message that acts of lawlessness will never betolerated,” said Lamola.

Nxumalo said cases of murder have been opened with the police.
