INKATHA Freedom Party (IFP) founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi died in September, and now the party has recruited his two children into the party's decision-making body.

Exercising his prerogative as per the IFP constitution, IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa has appointed Prince Ntuthukoyesizwe Buthelezi and Princess Sibuyiselwe Buthelezi to the National Council of the party.

IFP National Council is the party's highest decision-making body in between conferences.

Prince Ntuthukoyesizwe was the only Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi child who was not active in politics, as his sister Princess Sibuyiselwe is a member of Parliament. At the same time, Princess Phumzile Buthelezi is the president of the IFP Women's Brigade.

They also recruited former IFP secretary Rev Musa Zondi to the national council, who disappeared from the political space many years ago.

Buthelezi, who founded IFP in 1975, died on Saturday, 9 September at the age of 95 after he battled with back pain.

IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said an Extended National Council will be held on Sunday, 22 October.

"An extended sitting of the National Council brings together the entire membership of the council and includes representatives of all the party structures. The sitting of the extended National Council is in preparation for the policy conference of the party to adopt the 2014 National and Provincial Election timeline," he said.

He said all party structures will receive the draft policy document as part of the consultative process undertaken in conjunction with the leadership of all branches, constituencies, and districts.

"The IFP NC, having been briefed by the NEC, has resolved to hold the IFP's National Policy Conference on the 8 and 9 December 2023.

Hlengwa said the president expressed his trust in the abilities, skills and experience of these members and believes that they will greatly contribute to taking forward the vision of the IFP and His Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
