THE family of hospitalised Zulu monarch, traditional prime minister and IFP founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, is sad that he won't celebrate his 95th birthday at home in KwaPhindangene in KZN.

The family is also relieved that although Buthelezi will still be in the hospital during his birthday, he has steadily recovered and the complication he suffered has been cleared.

Buthelezi marks a month since he was hospitalised, and his family hopes he'll be discharged next week.

On Sunday, 27 August, Prince Buthelezi, the oldest Member of Parliament, will turn 95 years old.

Family spokesman Dr Bhekuyise Buthelezi said Prince Buthelezi has made steady progress under the supervision of the hospital's medical team.

"The complications he suffered have been cleared, and his doctors are happy with his health. Accordingly, it is anticipated that he will be discharged next week.

"We are, of course, saddened that he will not be at KwaPhindangene for his birthday on Sunday, but we are delighted with his recovery and look forward to next week," he said.

Buthelezi said they thank God that Prince Buthelezi has weathered this storm, and they will have much to celebrate on Sunday.

"We wish to thank the medical team who has taken good care of uMtwana throughout this stressful time.

"We also thank the nation for heeding the request to give space for Prince Buthelezi to rest and recover," he said.

Buthelezi said that Prince Buthelezi wishes to thank all those who have sent their prayers and good wishes for his speedy recovery.

"The outpouring of warmth towards him has been tremendous."

Prince Buthelezi, also known as uMtwana waKwaPhindangene, was admitted to hospital on Monday, 24 July, for routine tests and treatment for prolonged back pain and underwent a small procedure for back pain management.
