PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the eulogy at the special funeral of the IFP founder and Zulu monarch traditional prime minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Buthelezi's state official funeral service category one will be held at the Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Regional stadium in Ulundi, KZN on Saturday, 16 September 2023 and is expected to be attended by more than 20 000 people.

Former president Thabo Mbeki, former president Jacob Zuma and other dignitaries across the country and abroad are also expected to attend. The service will include elements of military honours with 21-gun salutes.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe has reminded the Ulundi residents to expect the loud noise of guns during the funeral.

“There will be a 21-gun salute. This means that extremely loud bangs will be heard in the vicinity that may have an effect on some people.

“Special care should be given to people suffering ill-health, the elderly and children. Owners of pets or domestic animals are also advised that these loud bangs are likely to severely agitate animals and therefore special provisions should be made for them for the duration of the funeral ceremony,” she said.

She said police visibility has been heightened in preparation for the 20 000 mourners that are expected to gather in Ulundi to pay their last respect to Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

“Under the auspices of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, the SAPS has mobilised its resources to ensure the safety and security of all attendees.

“Amabutho and those who will be dressed in traditional regalia are advised that traditional spears and shields will be allowed at the venue in line with the Zulu tradition and culture and for the sole purpose of honouring the late prince.

“However, members of the public are warned that no firearms will be permitted at the stadium and no illegal discharge of firearms will be tolerated,” she said.
