A PRAYER ceremony ended in tragedy when a member of a church and a pastor drowned.

Busisiwe Mazibuko (30) from Matikwe slipped and drowned in a dam in Inanda, north of Durban, after praying.

Pastor Khulekani Sibisi tried to rescue her but also went under the water and drowned.

The tragic incident happened on the night of Thursday, 1 December, after members of the Egalile Church in Zion visited the dam for a prayer.

Busisiwe’s body was recovered on the night of the incident while the pastor’s body was only found on Sunday night.

Busisiwe’s mother Rachel Mazibuko (60) told Daily Sun it was really hard to accept that her daughter is gone.

Her mum said Busisiwe joined the church two months ago.

Rachel said Busisiwe was studying teaching at the University of KZN.

“I was hoping she would finish university and take care of me. I’m in so much pain now that her life has been cut short,” she said.

Church member Siboniso Zungu (40) said 13 congregants went to the dam with the pastor.

“Our pastor has been taking people to the dam and even to the sea since 1988 and this has happened before,” said Siboniso.

KZN police spokeswoman Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said Inanda police have opened an inquest docket for investigation.
