ONE policeman is dead, and another is in hospital.

This after a shoot-out with thugs on Thursday night, 16 November.

The policeman from Ivory Park in Gauteng was shot dead by thugs as police were exchanging fire with ATM bombers.

More than 20 thugs including two women bombed an ATM at Total filling station in Hospital View near Tembisa Hospital. Out of the twenty suspects, none was injured.

The suspects who are still at large got away with undisclosed amount of money.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspect who were using high calibre firearms came from the garage to flee and they found police waiting for them.

He said a shoot-out ensued as thugs got away with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects also used powerful explosives as the cover of the ATM was blown out.

Residents living nearby said their houses were shaking.

Gogo Lettie Mokwena said she was woken up by the sound of the explosives.

"It was as if the bombs were on top of my roof. It seemed the ATM was bombed twice and after sometimes, we heard sound of the guns," she said.

She said it was about 11.30pm.

The gogo who previously witnessed a heist just in front of her house said they are not safe at all.

"We fear one day stray bullets might kill us. I believe the cash van could have been heading to the filling station," she said.

Another resident, Papiki Ngwenya, said he woke up with terrible headache, the sound was too much to bear.

"It's a pity we can't sell our houses. We are living on a ticking time bomb. Crime in this area is affecting the value of our houses," he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said police are on the trail of the suspects.

"We can confirm that two of our members were shot, one is dead. The suspects are still at large."
