THE scourge of drug abuse and gender-based violence (GBV) is an epidemic that has ravaged the community of Midrand, Gauteng.

In a bid to deal with the problem, the police in Midrand teamed up with the Christ Embassy and Church of Scientology to march against these social issues on Saturday, 29 October.

The communication officer for Midrand Police Station, Constable Elliot Mabulane, said he organised the march because of the skyrocketing number of cases being reported in and around the area.

“GBV and drug abuse have been a scourge on our precious nation. We want the Midrand community to know that we tolerate no such behaviour and we are prepared to fight it,” Mabulane said in a statement.

The march began at the Midrand cop shop and ended at San Ridge Square, where stands were placed to bring awareness to the community.

Alice Meiring of the Church of Scientology said they were against acts of violence that have not brought peace to the community.

“Our foundation is built on respect for one another and helping each other to build a peaceful community. We are honoured to be working with the police and other churches to spread the message of non-violence,” said Meiring.

A local taxi driver was also touched during the awareness campaign and volunteered to distribute Drug-Free World booklets to his fellow residents.

“I need more of these to give to the people in my community. They need to know that drugs are a big problem here,” he said.
