BAD cops must get double punishment than ordinary South Africans whenever they break the law.

That's according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.

Cele, who was speaking at the funeral service of the slain Sergeant Adrian Mahoney on Saturday, 27 April, said if the law-making duties were under his control, he'd introduce strict punishments for bad cops.

He said that it's cowardly and unforgivable for officers to break the law.

“These criminal police officers are surrendering the noble duty of protecting. That’s why, if I was a dictator, making the laws alone, every police officer who breaks the law would be double punished. They will be punished more than any ordinary South African who breaks the law.

"Actually, any police officer, any magistrate, any prosecutor, any judge or politician who breaks the law should be double punished.

“This is because they know what is right but decide to do what is wrong. Everybody must know what is right and wrong, but some of us are more privileged to know exactly what is right, but we decide to do what is wrong,” said Cele.

The minister said there are a lot of bad cops in the force who have dragged the police name through the mud.

He said the funeral of Sergeant Mahoney gave him confidence that he still has reliable cops who serve the communities wholeheartedly.
