POLICE are on the heels of 69 illegal immigrants who escaped from Lindela Repatriation Centre on 17 March.

Home Affairs spokesman Siya Qoza said they are working with police to capture all escapees, and so far, only one has been arrested.

The illegal immigrants escaped after a riot at the Centre manager by a private company, EnvironmmMongz.

Since the incident, Home Affairs said it was assessing its contract with the company.

The escapees were awaiting deportation at Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp.

Home Affairs said five are from Zimbabwe, three from Mozambique, two from Lesotho, three from Burundi, three from DRC, one from Nigeria, 38 from Tanzania and 14 from Malawi.

Qoza said the investigations by Home Affairs revealed there was an altercation between the inmates and EnvironMongz management and its security team.

He said during this altercation, the undocumented saw a chance and escaped.

Qoza said they are worried about how the EnvironMongz handled the matter and how the escape happened.
