Cops come to the rescue of poor family

A FAMILY from Ga-Molepo Village outside Polokwane, Limpopo are the proud owners of a new house.

The family's lives were changed after a woman (36) was shot by her partner (45). Luckily, the mother of four survived, but was left paralysed and unable to take care of her children.

Police spokesman, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the perpetrator was tracked down and arrested.

He said the family lived in a depilated shack, which touched the police. 

"The SAPS management in Limpopo started facilitating the house project in collaboration with various stakeholders including the Polokwane Municipality, Old Mutual and local business community.

"The project is in line with the annual SAPS National Day and Excellence Awards celebrations as well as the organisation's corporate social responsibility," said Ledwaba.

The newly built and fully furnished three-bedroom house was handed over to the family on Saturday, 29 April.

Deputy Police Minister, Cassel Mathale, was part of the handover. He was accompanied by National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, Deputy National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili, acting Deputy National Commissioner: Support Services, Lieutenant-General L Ntshiea, Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe and Polokwane mayor, John Mpe.

Masemola said the purpose of the day was to support a family affected by gender-based violence.

Stakeholders promised to continue in their endeavour to uplift families in similar situations and called on other stakeholders to participate in various initiatives that are aimed at supporting survivors of gender-based violence and related crimes.

Mathale applauded the joint efforts of the SAPS and various stakeholders in making a positive impact on the family's lives.

He condemned escalating incidents of gender-based violence and appealed to the community to stand together to end these crimes. He encouraged other stakeholders, especially the business community to support this type of projects.

Ledwaba added that the suspect is currently out on bail and will appear in the Mankweng Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 3 May.
