COPS are searching for Thabo Benzana, the son of businessman David Benzana.

Major-General Fred Kekana, who is the West Rand district commissioner, said they need his help in connection to a case.

Kekana told Daily Sun he was appealing to the community, specifically in the Randfontein and Mohlakeng area to assist them.

“He must come forward to the Hawks offices in Krugersdorp for questioning and to assist the police in the investigation of the attempted CIT incident that happened on Monday, 19 February and other incidents,” he said.

This comes after a massive shoot-out between the police and suspected cash-in-transit robbers in Randfontein, West Rand in the early hours of Monday, 19 February.

The suspected robbers intended to rob a vehicle transporting gold from the West Rand to a certain destination.

The shooting incident ended with one suspect shot dead, three arrested and a police official shot in his arm.

The residents told Daily Sun they have been reeling in shock since the suspects were cornered at a car wash, where several shots were fired.

A resident said he heard gunshots during the early hours of the morning, and he asked himself what could be happening on the streets.

“When I woke up in the morning I was told where the gunshots were coming from. This is a business space. When I got there, the police had already barricaded the car wash. We still don’t know what happened,” he said.

He said this was the first time that something like this had happened in their area.

“The car wash never looked suspicious. It was a chilling spot for many of us and I have chilled there with gents once or twice. I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary,” he said.

Another resident said it was shocking that such an incident happened there.

“This raises an eyebrow. We don’t know how to feel about this place going forth,” he said.
