A 13-YEAR-OLD is nursing injuries after he was bitten by a pit bull.
The boy, from Delft in Cape Town, was attacked while playing soccer with friends at Mandela Peace Park on 19 October.
His father (47) said the dog bit his son on the chest and thigh.
“From what I heard, the owner came to the the park with four dogs. One was the pit bull that attacked my son,” he said.
The dog allegedly broke free from the leash and other kids ran for dear life when they saw this.
“Unfortunately, my son couldn’t run fast enough, so it caught up with and attacked him.”
The father told Daily Sun some of the kids came screaming, saying his son was attacked by a dog.
“I ran to the park and found him lying there. The owner had already left. I then rushed my son to hospital for a rabies injection.
“He is still traumatised. I want the owner to pay for what he did.”
He said the owner tried to run, but someone tailed him to his home.
The victim’s father has opened a case against the owner and also wants the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to impound dog.
A resident said people who walked around with pit bulls needed to be arrested or have them taken away.
“These dogs must be taken away.”
Wayne Dyason, city’s law enforcement spokesman, said they would take action if the matter was reported.
“If a dog attacks someone, it must be taken away,” said Dyason, adding that the owner , must pay a R2 500 fine.
He said a dog must be on a leash in public spaces. Failure to comply is R500.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said a case of assault was opened.
“According to reports, the dog broke loose and attacked the boy.”
