GOGO Mateboho Saule was at home on Sunday, 20 November when she got a call that pit bulls had attacked her grandson.
When she got to the scene, she found the body of three-year-old Keketso Saule lying on the ground. He was dead.
“Boys tried to throw stones at the dogs, but it didn’t work,” said the gogo from Hennenman, Free State.
“A neighbour quickly boiled water and poured it over the dogs and they left Keketso alone, but it was too late.”
She said she will never forget the scene.
“Some of his body parts were strewn around. My innocent grandson died a horrific death.”
Keketso was playing with other kids at Sekoti Mpate section when a neighbour’s two pit bulls attacked him.
The angry residents burnt one of the pit bulls to death, while the other was taken away by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
The SunTeam spoke to a resident (46), who said they couldn’t guarantee the safety of the owner if police won’t arrest him.
“The owner was reckless. How can you leave your gate open while you know that you have dangerous dogs? He must be charged with at least culpable homicide,” he said.
Captain Steven Thakeng said there’ll be an additional charge of keeping of vicious dogs.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted.”
“We have noted with concern that a clip is making the rounds on social media platforms showing the dogs killing the child. This viewing of the clip must stop immediately,” he said.
Provincial Health MEC Montsheng Tsiu said Emergency Medical Services officials could not hold back their tears. “They have been given time off,” he said.
