LIVESTOCK were quietly grazing in an open field on Saturday, 10 December when four pit bulls pounced on them.

The dogs apparently escaped their enclosure and jumped over a fence to attack the four sheep and one goat near Ezenzeleni in Warden, Free State.

Residents rescued the livestock, which had bite wounds all over their bodies, by pelting the dogs with stones.

They said the owner of the dogs was not home.

The owner of the livestock, the neighbour of the dogs’ owner, refused to comment and said the matter was with the police.

Resident Siphesihle Khuma said the pit bulls were a serious danger to the community as they weren’t being taken care of.

“Last month in Hennenman and Bloemfontein, pit bulls killed kids. We are really fearing for our lives. It’s very fortunate they attacked livestock and not a person,” he said.

“We call on the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and police to take away those pit bulls for the sake of the community. We don’t want to wait until someone is mauled to death by these dogs.

“We are not sure if the owner freed them to protect the house while he was away.”

A case of malicious damage to property was registered at Warden cops shop.

Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said the police were working with the SPCA to keep people and livestock safe while they looked for the owner.

Residents said the owner of the pit bulls had not been seen since the incident happened.
