Gender violence activist Victor Pike said many men are abused in their relationships and marriages, but they are not brave enough to act.

Pike of Father A Nation (FAN), which brings men together in Cape Town to take action against gender-based violence under the slogan #Noexcuse, said men need to speak out and get help if they are being abused.

He said his organisation is there to talk to men and give them practical help when they are abused.

He said that majority of abused men do not talk about the abuse because they are afraid of being ridiculed. He said that even in the places where they should get help, such as cop shop, men are not taken seriously when they report abuse.

"All men who feel that they will be made a laughing stock if they go to a police station to report gender-based violence. We stand by them and support them, so they don’t feel they are being made a laughing stock at a police station," Pike said.

The activist said abused men keep their anger inside because they have nowhere to run. He said if the anger continues to build up, it will "explode like a bomb leading some men to commit violence against women and children.

Pike said through FAN’s #NoExcuse programmes, they have managed to help several men. He said the abuse of men is real.

“At my last meeting, I gathered 78 men and 12 of them raised their hands and said they are being abused. The abuse can be verbal, emotional and even physical. That is why we say to the men who have been abused: There is no excuse for abusing and killing women. Come on, let us talk about it, there is no excuse for killing women. We are ready to help and even offer counselling,” Pike said.
