ADDRESSING a Women’s Day Commemoration held at Richmond’s Silahla Sport Field in KZN on Tuesday, 9 August, President Cyril Ramaphosa said inequality between men and women must come to an end.
The commemoration was attended by thousands of women from the area and across KZN.
MECs and ministers were among those who attended.
“Last year, more girls passed with distinctions than boys. More female students are enrolled in universities. Close to half the members in Parliament are women. The incoming deputy chief justice is a woman,” said the president.
He said many women are unemployed and on average, they earn half of what men do.
“But that must come to an end. There should be equal pay. Inequality between men and women must come to an end,” he said.
“We’ve held workshops to train women because we needed to do skills upgrading.”
Meanwhile, the Umzansi Youth in Business organisation picketed on the sidelines of the Women’s Day Commemoration in Richmond Junction. Social worker Zanele Bukhosini said the picket was aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by women which includes teenage pregnancy, statutory rape, GBV and lack of economic opportunities.
They also handed over roses to all women attending the commemoration.
