A MAN was arrested by the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) for possession of suspected stolen property in Yeoville on Wednesday, 8 February.
JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla said police received information about a cellphone that was taken during an armed business robbery at Cash Crusaders in Florida.
The cellphone’s tracking signal was updating in Yeoville.
“The officers proceeded to the updated location along Page Street and observed a red Chevrolet Aveo, that was parked on the side of the road. When the driver spotted the officers, he sped off at a high speed. They gave chase and managed to stop the vehicle along Fortesque and Yeo Street,” Fihla said in a statement.
He added that officers searched the car and found three cellphones, one of them a new Huawei.
Fihla further said the phone was tested using the IME number, and confirmed to be one of those taken in the robbery.
“The suspect was questioned regarding the items, and he led officers to a basement at a block of flats on Page Street. They found a white BMW along with false registration plates, believed to be used in the robbery. It was searched and laptops, cellphones and chargers were found,” he added.
The suspect was arrested and detained at Yeoville Police Station.
The Chevrolet Aveo and BMW, used in the commission of the crime, were seized.
