FIVE people have died and another five left critically injured following a gruesome head-on collision involving a bus and bakkie on the N1 highway towards Ventersburg, Free State, today, 16 December.

The N1 is temporarily closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes as police and Emergency Medical Services are still busy at the scene.

Captain Steven Thakeng said a case of culpable homicide would be investigated.

The bus was travelling to Zimbabwe and a bakkie from Ventersburg to Bloemfontein when they collided near Dampoort Crossing.

“A man and woman in the bakkie were certified dead at the scene, together with three other people in the bus. Five were admitted to hospital with serious injuries,” said Thakeng.

Cops were still at the scene to also control the traffic that was piling up.

“Motorists coming from Joburg can use the Welkom road towards Bloemfontein, and those from Bloemfontein can use the R30 between Brandfort and Theunissen road towards Joburg,” said Thakeng.

This is the second horrible accident in a week, after 13 people died on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei towards Winburg on Monday, 12 December.
