SIX bodies of suspected zama zamas were found scattered near an old mine in Maraisburg, Joburg.
Their bodies were found near the N1 highway between the N17 and Maraisburg off-ramps.
All the six had been shot and some had gunshots to the head.
Gauteng police spokeswoman Brigadier Brenda Muridili said, “The police were called in after there were reports of several bodies seen by passersby on the N1.”
She said police came with pathologists as well as K9 units and as soon as they arrived, they cordoned off the scene.

“They discovered six bodies that we can confirm. At this stage we do not know what the motive is. The bodies are confirmed to have gunshot wounds. We will be investigating six cases of murder and the motive will be determined.”
She said according to information at their disposal, the deceased were suspected to be zama zamas.
Muridili also said the identities and the nationalities of those who died couldn’t be confirmed yet.
Due to the bodies being next to the highway, curious motorists caused a lot of traffic as they slowed down near the scene to catch a glimpse of the bodies.
There is a possibility that the number of bodies may increase as the search continues.
