STELLENBOSCH University student Babalo Ndwayana has opened a case against a fellow student who urinated on his laptop and books on Sunday, 15 May.

Ndwayana (20) said he opened a case, but dismissed reports that he had forgiven him.

“No, I didn’t. I actually laid a charge against him today,” he said.

Many people felt that suspending the student was not enough.

A petition to have him expelled has garnered more than 50 000 signatures in 24 hours.

The petition, on change.org platform, was started by Anke Spies, accompanied by the message: “The student urinated on the desk, books and laptop of a first-year black student in Huis Marais. This was a racially motivated attack and in response to his actions, the student claimed ‘this is what we do to black boys’.”

It continued: “This action is a blatant violation of the victim’s human rights as is protected by the Constitution of South Africa. The student has been suspended, but this is not justified consequence for his actions. He has violated another student’s human dignity, and needs to be removed from the university.”

ANC Western Cape spokesman Sifiso Mtsweni said: “There has been an increasing trend emerging from the university of instances of racism and management’s lacklustre response. We have taken note and welcome the opening of a police case against the perpetrator.”

He said that the ANC called on the university to act harshly against the white student who shamelessly urinated on a fellow student in an act of sheer racism.

“There are also videos circulating, purporting to be emerging from students which attempt to paint it as being ‘soiled’ by the admission as well as participation of black students in campus.”

Captain Frederick van Wyk said: “A 20-year-old complainant has opened cases of housebreaking, malicious damage to property and crimen injuria at Stellenbosch SAPS. Investigations continue, and no arrest has been made as yet.”
