MPUMALANGA police have launched a manhunt after an armed man reportedly went on a shooting spree at a tavern near Hazyview, Mbombela and allegedly shot three people on Monday, 4 April.
According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, one person died on the scene while the remaining two were taken to hospital after sustaining injuries.
Mohlala said reports indicate that a scuffle broke out between four men in a tavern at Shabalala Trust around 6.30am.
“One of the men is said to have then fired shots at the three and torched two vehicles, a VW Golf and Isuzu bakkie, before fleeing the scene. One succumbed to his injuries while two sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital,” Mohlala said.
He said cops opened a murder case with two counts of attempted murder and arson.
“A manhunt has since been launched for the suspect. Part of the investigation will be to determine whether the owner of the liquor outlet was operating lawfully,” Mohlala said.
Police have urged anyone with information to call CrimeStop at 08600 10111.
Meanwhile, provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has warned owners of businesses, specifically liquor outlets, to take responsibility and play their part in ensuring the safety of customers.
“There are regulations put in place for liquor businesses and these controlling measures should be adhered to by all operators in order to prevent similar incidents. Be that as it may, the law should take its course,” Manamela said.
