NO mayor should be sitting in any board of the industries where they govern.

This is according to King Cetshwayo District Mayor Thami Ntuli, who said he did not want mayors who are bribed with coffee and muffins in big boardrooms to betray the people who voted them into power.

He said if a mayor became a board member, they were committed to putting the needs of the industry first, instead of those of the people they served.

“I was shocked when I took over the office to learn that some leaders were in the boards, making it difficult for them to resolve residents’ issues,” said Ntuli at the district integrated development plan for uMhlathuze Local Municipality at the KwaDlangezwa sport field in KZN on Wednesday, 19 October.

He also instructed the City of uMhlathuze to get reports from local industries as he needed to know how many residents had been hired. This as he wanted to know how big industries were benefitting the locals.

“We can’t have big industries using our land and not benefiting our people. As leaders, we need to be on the people’s side. I have instructed the local municipality to inquire about the reports I need from these industries that are making millions on our land.”

Ntuli said that he needed all the reports before December and if they had not included residents, he’d lead them to the said industries to find answers.

“I will personally lead residents because we are tired of big industries that only care about profit, not the well-being of the communities they are in. We need to cut that norm and nurture future leaders who will meet the needs of the people,” said Ntuli.

City of uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi said they were working on getting the reports, and will then hand it over to Ntuli.
