Tshepang Lutshaba said after the death of her aunt, she was inspired to start an NPO to fight against cancer.

TSHEPANG Lutshaba is on a mission to fight cancer in Mzansi.

After witnessing two of her family members battle with cancer and later died, Tshepang founded an organisation called SA United Against Cancer (Sauac) to change people's lives.

During breast cancer awareness month (October), Tshepang will be holding her wellness walk against cancer.

Sauac is an NPO organisation based in Joburg. The organisation aims to bring a change in the approach to cancer prevention.

Tshepang said her aunt succumbed to cervical cancer, while few of her family members battled against the same disease, and she had to make a difference.

"The story behind the initiative is to support people living with cancer and cancer survivors. After losing my aunt in 2017, I felt there was a need for me to have an NPO so that we can assist people. I had to live by her words and honour her," Tshepang said.

Talking about her upcoming event, she said that Wellness Walk Against Cancer is a family event, and therefore encourage all people from different walks of life to join them and make a difference.

The event will take place at Rietvlei Zoo Farm in Alberton, Ekurhuleni on Saturday, 28 October.

Cancer is a rising crisis for South Africa as the World Health Organization said in February 2023 that an estimated 1,1 million new cancer cases are being reported in Africa each year, and there are about 700 000 deaths on the continent from cancer each year.

Here are some five common signs and symptoms of breast cancer:

Lump in the Breast: The most common symptom of breast cancer is the discovery of a new lump or mass in the breast or underarm area. It may feel hard, irregular in shape, and painless, but some lumps can be tender or painful.

Changes in Breast Size or Shape: Any unexplained changes in the size or shape of one or both breasts can be a cause for concern. This includes swelling, distortion, or dimpling of the breast.

Breast Pain: While breast cancer is not typically associated with pain, some women with breast cancer do experience breast discomfort or pain. However, breast pain is a more common symptom in benign breast conditions.

Nipple Changes: Changes in the nipples can include nipple retraction (turning inward), nipple discharge (other than breast milk), or changes in nipple appearance such as redness, scaliness, or flaking.

Skin Changes: Skin changes on the breast can include redness, warmth, or puckering (resembling the texture of an orange peel). These changes may be indicative of inflammatory breast cancer, a rare but aggressive form of the disease.
