THE North West Department of Education took swift action to rectify a concerning situation at Nthapelang Primary School in Matolong Village near Taung, where toilets were used as classrooms on Wednesday, 17 January.
The school has 211 pupils, five teachers, and seven classrooms, with an average class size of 20 pupils. The largest class has 34 pupils.
Upon discovery, the department promptly dispatched officials to address the issue and by the next day, pupils resumed in their regular classrooms.
The department's investigation revealed that the principal made a serious mistake by using the toilets as classrooms, even though the school had sufficient classrooms available for teaching.

Furthermore, the principal had taken teachers from neighbouring schools, a decision considered inappropriate by the department.
Viola Motsumi, North West Education MEC strongly condemned the principal’s actions of allowing pupils to have classes in toilets and initiated an investigation into the matter.
“We cannot overemphasise how incorrect this decision undertaken by the principal is. As such, this incident needs our immediate attention. I have since launched a team to formally investigate this incident and pursue appropriate consequences”, said Motsumi.
The department said it would actively monitor the situation at the school ensuring adherence to all departmental policies and procedures.
