The gogo jumped out of bed to find the shack in her yard on fire and her RDP catching alight.
The gogo from Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, said she’d have burnt to death if her neighbours hadn’t noticed the fire and rescued her.
Gogo Johanna said the cause of the fire was a mystery: she ran out of electricity the previous day.
Her daughter, Phindile Mkhwanazi (47), said the gogo lived with her brother but he wasn’t at home when the fire started.
“We’d like to thank neighbours who came to help,” she said.
“If it wasn’t for them, the fire could have burnt the house. It was very strong.”
The gogo said she lost a lot of property and some of the items that burnt were brand new.
“I lost two new beds, a washing machine and an electric stove. I’m not working and don’t know how I’ll replace these items,” she said.

The gogo said she used the shack as a storeroom and kitchen while her son slept in it as well.
“My son lost everything,” said the gogo.
Residents said they suspected the fire could’ve been vutha.
“It’s strange. This fire just started out of nowhere and burnt everything,” said resident, Joe Mukansi (50).
