A WALTER Sisulu University student was killed at the weekend.
The incident happened on Zamukulungisa campus on Saturday.
Asanda Mtshezi, SRC publicity officer, said the student was heard on a voice note saying he had successfully stolen something.
He was allegedly beaten and thrown from a third floor balcony at one of the residences.
“Apparently, the student was explaining to his group of friends on WhatsApp that he usually stole,” said Asanda.
University spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said the dead man was a second-year public management student. She said he was accused of stealing cellphones and laptops.
Police spokeswoman Captain Dineo Koena confirmed a case of murder was opened.
“No arrests have been made and cops are investigating,” she said.
Koena has urged students not to take the law into their own hands.
