THE floods that struck Durban last month have passed, but there are residents who are still suffering the after effects.
The residents of Area 35 and 38 at Umgababa live near dangerous potholes caused by the heavy rain. They told Daily Sun that tarred roads near their houses have not been repaired since the heavy rain.
Ntombenhle Mkhize (39) said she feared her children could break their legs as there was no other road to get to school.
“I leave home for work at about 5.30am and I rely on my neighbour to help them throught the huge potholes when they go to school,” said Ntombenhle.
She said kids sometimes play in these damaged roads.
Resident Getrude Hlongwane (75) shared her heartbreak when she buried her late son, David (50), last week.
“We were forced to carry the coffin on foot because the mortuary van couldn’t get through on the damaged road,” said gogo Hlongwane.
Another resident, Doctor Ndaba (34), told Daily Sun he is getting married on 3 September and he is trying to organise people to fix the road. “The man is charging R500 per hour. I’m going to incur costs I didn’t budget for,” he said.
The residents told the People’s Paper that the problem requires eThekwini Municipality to intervene because Councillor Thami Magubane has turned a blind eye. Magubane said: “The municipality should fix damaged roads. It’s up to them to decide when they will fix them.”
