IT’S been almost two months since Maria Mokwena (36) had petrol poured over her before she was set alight in front of her shack.

This happened because she vowed not to pay money to people who had illegally connected electricity.

Maria, who is still traumatised, will have to live with the scars for the rest of her life.

Daily Sun published Maria’s story on 27 October under the headline: “Set alight by evil boss lady.”

Maria said she is scared the people who attacked her might come and finish her off.

Maria was allegedly set on fire by a woman known as Makhadzi and her gangsters for refusing to pay R150 for an illegal connection.

She was burnt on her left arm towards her back and down to her buttocks.

“I almost died. The pain was terrible.

“I tried to run while I was burning.

“The thugs watched me and laughed,” she said.

The community came to Maria’s rescue.

She was admitted at Mamelodi Regional Hospital on 15 September and was discharged on 29 October.

The community came to her rescue and that’s why she is still alive.

“My wounds were stinking. There were maggots coming out of the wounds,” she said.

Maria said that no amount of money will get her to drop the case against the thugs.

She said that she doesn’t really know why she was the victim as she was talking on behalf of the community.

“These people are out on bail and I’m scared they could come and finish me off,” she said.

The mum of three children said her family is still living in fear.

Community member Fortunate Mogane (31) said they sent a strong message to Makhadzi that she must leave the area.

“We want her gone,” said residents.

Gauteng Police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Sello said: “A case of attempted murder was opened at Mamelodi East Police Station and three suspects were arrested two women, aged 37 and 45, and a man, 29, were arrested.”

She said the suspects were released on bail on 8 November and their case was postponed to 27 January next year.

Sello said Makhadzi is out on R3 000 bail and the two accused on R1 000 bail each.
