GOGO Elina Mkhize-Vilakazi needs help fixing her house, which keeps getting flooded every time it rains.

The 63-year-old gogo from Senaoane, Soweto, said every rainy season causes a headache for her and her family because the water goes straight into her house.

On Monday, 5 December she was woken up by the sound of heavy rain and when she got off her bed, she slipped and fell from all the water that was on the floor.

She said she was rushed to the hospital and is now forced to walk using a crutch.

“From all the troubles this rain has brought this one is the worst.

“I have lost good and expensive furniture because it was ruined by the water that keeps coming inside my house. Now I’m also forced to walk with a stick because of it. I am tired. I need help,” she said.

Gogo said in the early hours of Friday morning, 9 December, her daughter woke her up from her sleep telling her the house has been flooded again.

She told Daily Sun that she carefully rose and when she stepped on the floor, it was like she was stepping in a stream of water.

“It was so bad because even all my electrical appliances got damaged. The water was knee-high, as it was raining so badly.”

Gogo said she has been seeking help from her councillors, but it seems like they’re also failing to help.

“I don’t know where to turn to, or who to talk to. My husband died in April also trying to find help. It also looks like I will also die without getting any help.”

Community leader and member of the IFP, Sipho Zwane, pleaded with Good Samaritans who could assist gogo to resolve her problem.

Ward 33 Councillor Phumzile Mazibuko said she has been working to assist gogo for a while now, and the process is still underway.

“We have a meeting soon, where we will be discussing her issue and then we will know where to go after that,” she told the People’s Paper.
