THE Limpopo Division of the High Court in Polokwane sentenced David Matjila (45) to life in jail for double murder.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi, in August 2021, the accused went to Appiesdoring in Burgersfort where his girlfriend Farina Mahlake (34) and her son Kgoitsione (2) were living.
Seabi said the accused found both of them asleep at the residence.
“The accused stabbed the mother and child several times with a knife, killing them instantly. He then covered the deceased with a blanket and slept next to them.
“The following day, the accused fled the scene after a concerned resident alerted the police,” Seabi said in a statement.
He said the accused was arrested later on the same day while in a taxi travelling to Hammanskraal in Gauteng.
Seabi said the accused made several court appearances until he was found guilty and sentenced to two life sentences on Monday, 17 October.
