MORE than 20 vehicles were involved in a multi-vehicle collision on the N3 in Hilton near Pietermaritzburg, KZN, on Monday, 10 April.

The cause of the accident is still unclear, but it is suspected that bad weather may have played a role as there was heavy mist in the area.

The deputy mayor of uMngeni, Sandile Mnikathi, said that many people were seriously injured, and some died in the incident.

“The area is very misty, and the long weekend traffic has also made things worse. uMngeni Traffic has five vehicles attending to the scene in support of RTI and Msunduzi Traffic,” said Mnikathi.

KZN transport spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said preliminary investigations indicate that at least five people died and numerous individuals were injured in the horrific accident.

“This accident involves five trucks, eight taxi and 22 light vehicles,” said Ncalane.

The scene of the accident is not far from the place where Transport Minister Sindiswe Chikunga conducted her safety campaign for the Easter holidays.

Leading the operation earlier on Monday, the minister said she was concerned about the road deaths that seem to be increasing.

She said most of the accidents are caused by human error.
