ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo has promised that KZN would support the newly elected leadership of the ANC under President Cyril Ramaphosa.
He said despite having hoped for a different outcome, they have no choice but to support the current leadership.
He said the branches made their decisions and they needed to be respected.
He said Ramaphosa was elected democratically by the delegates at the Nasrec Convention Centre.
“There were no shenanigans. We were there and observed everything. He won and he is the president until 2027. All of us are subjected to the current leadership that has been elected,” said Mtolo.
He said, as leaders, they were not above the branches and could not dictate to them who to elect.
He said what happened in the elections was a clear indication that branches had dismissed slate politics.
“They are sending a message that we must move away from slate politics,” he said.
Mtolo said they were not disappointed that not even a single candidate from the province made it to the top seven.
He said there was no law that there must be candidates from KZN in leadership positions.
He said they were not electing people who would represent a geographical location but were electing members of the ANC.
He denied the conference was factionalised.
He said everything went smoothly and there was no tension among members.
“We are going to surprise you. We will go to the 2024 national elections more united and we will defeat all these oppositions,” said Mtolo.
