COMMUNITY leader Christopher Zondani has nowhere to live since a mob destroyed his shack while he was sleeping with his family.
His car windows were also vandalised. Since then, the secretary of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) Nkandla branch in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, has been squatting with family and friends. Zondani said community leaders lied to people, telling them he was blocking service delivery and must be removed from the kasi.
“As leaders, we work as a collective. Their claim is baseless. I’m being targeted and I know people are playing politics,” he said.
One leader said they ordered Zondani to leave but he refused, which was why they demolished his shack.
Another leader said Zondani was standing in the way of the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) organisation which aims to help upgrade their kasi.
“The process should lead to the electrification of the kasi. He is going against the interests of the community so he had to be taken out.”
Zondani said a resident suggested that instead of beating people up, they must be removed.
“I endorsed that to save lives, but I was chased out without anyone hearing my story,” he said.
Mncedisi Mbatha from the VPUU organisation said: “We have never dealt with Zondani as an individual but along with other members.”
Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed a case of malicious damage to property was opened and eight suspects were bust on 26 April.
