HE LIKES living among black people.

And mlungu Pule, as locals call him, has made a home for himself in Tambo squatter camp in Bekkersdal, west of Joburg.

Residents say no gathering is complete without Pule as the 28-year-old loves to cook and helps whenever they host events.

Pule, whose real name is Karel Mienie, is originally from Ventersdorp and moved to Bekkersdal in 2021.

“I love living among black people. I find my neighbours to be welcoming and warm people,” he said.

“I don’t have a proper job. I go around looking for piece jobs to survive and they give me jobs.”

When the SunTeam visited, Pule was helping at a funeral service.

Resident Elizabeth Moyo said what they liked about Pule was that he was honest.

“He brings back the change when you send him to the shops,” she said.

Pule said he lived in a shack and was still trying to build a life. He said he didn’t have a fridge and appealed for donations to buy one.

Fistos Ngwenya said: “He’s just like us.”
