A CAPE Town man has been arrested for scamming a former top cop after they met through Facebook.

Hawks spokeswoman Zinzi Hani said the victim lost more than R3 million.

She said the man was arrested after a warrant of arrest was issued against him. He was arrested while in court during his appearance for another similar case on Wednesday, 24 August, in Cape Town.

“It’s reported that he met his victim on Facebook and claimed to be a civil engineer from Oslo.

“The 55-year-old suspect was arrested in the Bellville District Court, while appearing on a similar matter. He is due to make his first appearance in the Oudtshoorn Magistrates Court on Friday, 26 August, on charges of fraud and money laundering,” said Hani.

Last month, the Western Cape Commercial Crime Cyber Investigation unit cops also arrested two people, a 28-year-old woman from Khayelitsha and a 51-year-old man from Parklands, after they swindled their victims R930 000 in online romance scams.
