PUPILS from Parliament Street Primary School in Mfuleni, Cape Town were rushed to hospital on Friday, 20 October.

It's alleged that several pupils were rushed to Nonkqubela Day Hospital in Khayelitsha after they complained of stomach ache after eating muffins.

A source said she saw a group of sick pupils on hospital beds while she was visiting a sick relative.

“I was shocked because there were a lot of them and others were crying while rolling on the beds,” said the source.

A parent whose child was affected said she was shocked when she received a call that her child had been hospitalised. She left work and rushed to the hospital, where she found her daughter, who's in grade 5, crying in pain.

“She was sweating and crying. For a second I thought my daughter was going to die, but nurses assured me everything was under control,” she said.

The parent said when she asked the child what happened, she said they ate muffins they bought from a nearby spaza shop.

Western Cape Education spokeswoman Bronagh Hammond said they were not aware of the incident, but enquired and were updated by the school.

“The pupils got sick after eating muffins sold from a spaza shop. The school governing body met the owners of the spaza shop, who have indicated that they bought the products from a factory shop in Maitland. They will return the products. The district will conduct further enquiries into the matter,” said Hammond.
