NOMAHLUBI Yengwana (22) was left heartbroken after her son died in a freak accident on Wednesday, 3 August.
The child’s gogo, Ntomboxolo Maya (48), said Enzokuhle (5) came running to their home in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, and collapsed in front of her.
Ntomboxolo said when she looked at Enzokuhle, blood was gushing from his neck from what looked like a stab wound.
She said he called out the name of a four-year-old he had been playing with before losing consciousness.
The young boy was rushed to hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
The incident happened at around 6pm while the kids were playing in the street.
Family members said when they investigated, they found out that Enzokuhle was not stabbed but was pierced by a metal object protruding from a car boot as he ran past.
A resident, who witnessed the incident, said the boys were chasing each other and ran too close to the car as it was dark.
Ntomboxolo said: “We went to his friend, who was still with other kids, and they told us what happened.
“They said after he freed himself from the sharp object, he stood up and ran home.”
The family said reports circulating on social media that he was stabbed by another child were all lies.
Resident Mzimasi Zakade said:
“The metal looks like the material they use to make braai stands.
“The It scratched my trousers and they were torn. boy just ran into it and when he tried to free himself, some of the blood vessels in his neck burst,” he said.
Nomahlubi pleaded for help to bury her son in the Eastern Cape.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said a murder case was being investigated.
