FIKILE Mahlangu (29) was left alone with a child to raise after the biological dad dumped his daughter after realising the child was born with a disability.
But Fikile didn’t allow this to break her. She wasn’t willing to give up on Melokuhle, her only child, and now she has found love.
Fikile has found a man who loves her and her five-year-old daughter.
The couple from Etwatwa in Ekurhuleni are appealing for help with a wheelchair to help Melokuhle move around with ease.
“Her clothes get worn out fast because she slides on the floor on her bum,” she said. “My boyfriend is a good man and I thank him for loving us and making sure that Melokuhle is taken care of.
“He tries hard to provide for her even though it’s hard.”
Fikile said she was forced to quit her job as a cleaner to look after the child as she could not find a suitable person to do so. “Having a child like this has its challenges and I have to be there all the time.”
Fikile said her daughter was on the waiting list to be seen by neurologists next year and she was undergoing treatment for conditions related to epilepsy. She said her daughter was also not getting a disability grant.
Fikile, a South African, said she didn’t know what the delay was as she applied several times but it has not been successful. Gauteng Sassa spokewoman Nandi Mosia said the child’s condition makes her qualify for a grant.
She promised to send social workers to investigate the case.
